Childrens Treatments

Here at Market Dental Kinsale, we are always delighted to see children of all ages. We recognise the importance of developing a positive attitude to dental treatment in young children so that a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile can be maintained throughout a patient’s lifetime. All too often, young children will pick up on fear and anxiety of their parents based on negative experiences in their own childhood. We encourage you to bring your child for their first appointment where an introduction to the surgery can be carried out in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. We like to build a relationship with younger patients and earn their trust before any treatment is required. We can also provide tips to children and parents on effective brushing and dietary advice which will hopefully prevent problems before they require intervention.

To avoid decay in the baby teeth we recommend:

  • Keeping the frequency of intake of sugary food and drinks to a minimum. For example restrict sweet treats to weekends and/or after dinner. The worst thing a child can do is “graze” on sugary snacks/drinks all day long.
  • Avoid sticky sweets which will stick to the teeth and cause prolonged episodes of decay
  • Never put a child to bed with a bottle
  • Avoid juices or sugary drinks – try to get a child used to only drinking milk and water
  • Brush twice daily with a pea sized amount of an age appropriate toothpaste under adult supervision up to the age of about 7. It is important to keep the adult toothpaste out of reach up to about age 7.
  • Have a dental check up and scale and polish ( if necessary) every 6 months
  • Remember that the habits a person develops in childhood will shape their behaviour for life so lead by good example!
