Fillings are required to repair cavities which are caused by decay or fractured teeth. Usually a local anaesthetic is given to numb the area.
Composite (tooth coloured) fillings
The technology used in composite fillings has improved dramatically in recent years and it is now a very strong and durable filling material. It also bonds to the natural tooth. Because it comes in a variety of shades, it can be layered and matched to your existing tooth colour producing a very natural appearance.
Amalgam (silver) fillings.
Amalgam is a very safe, durable and cost effective material that was widely used in the past to restore teeth. It’s main disadvantage is its appearance and nowadays many fillings are done in composite ( tooth coloured filling material). In some cases, particularly in back teeth, it is clinically very difficult to place a composite filling and amalgam remains a very useful alternative.
